Small icons, large grid

My problem is, I had been using normal icons forever, but then someone asked
me for a large sized icon, so I made one. To test it, I made my desktop icons
large. Good so far. Then I turned the icons back to normal (unchecked “Use
large icons†in display prosperities > appearance > effects), but the icons
are still aligned to a large grid. I did it a few times but it still is using
a large grid....

Try these two settings...
Icon spacing (Horizontal): 43

Icon spacing (Veritcal): 43

43x43 is the default setting.

1. Right-click an empty area of your desktop, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Appearance tab, and then click Advanced.
3. In the Item list, click the Window element that you want to change.

Icon spacing (Vertical)
