Sluggish Drive

Hi,

I recently did a clean install of XP Pro SP1 to my drive (a 2.5 inch
laptop/portable type) after which I noticed that the drive became very
sluggish in performance - in fact it almost hanged at times.

Thinking the install may have been bad I've done a reinstall only to find
the same thing.

I didn't have this happen when using W2K when the drive zipped along and I'm
wondering if I'm missing something in setting up XP.

Write Cache is enabled - but then it was for W2K so it's not that - is there
anything else I should be tweaking to get my drive running better?

Thanks.

Colin

http://cquirke.mvps.org/pccrisis.htm refers, until you exclude
physical HD defects. A failing HD will often present exactly like
this, as several "helpful features" such as NTFS's on-the-fly "fixing"
of bad clusters and the HD's internal firmware "fixing" of bad sectors
hide "your HD is bad" error messages and replace these with long
unresponsive periods during which they try to "fix" things.
