Sluggish computer

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking that it would be a good idea to update my computer/windows xp so that they would be better able to protect me from computer viruses. I had not done this for a very long time and downloaded service pack one and all other updates available. However, my computer now acts very sluggish. It is sluggish when I launch a new application (It doesn't matter which one it is.) It is also sluggish when I am surfing the internet. This is flustrating because I have 2.4 gigabite, two year old system that used to fly through these activities. Has anyone else experienced something similar and is there anything to be done besides re-formating and never installing these updates again?

You need MOST of the Windows Updates nut there have been
issues with some of them causing slow operation. Those have
generally been fixed. Often there is a conflict with some
other program, such as Norton, that causes the slow down.

Have you defragged and run an anti-virus scan and a spyware
check?
