Slowness on text appearing and file opening issues

Hi
Recently my laptop started to have problems opening files from desktop or in
windows explorer. The egg timer appears and the application opens but it can
take minutes for the file to appear. This is particularly bad with Excel
files. The same files will open straight away if I open the application
first and then follow the FILE OPEN route.
At the same time I started to get delays when typing, these are sporadic but
essentially the screen freezes from time to time and I have to wait for the
text to appear. I have a well speced laptop running XP home and have Norton
AV.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

How much RAM memory?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry

Thanks - The total is c55000, the peak is c61000 and the limit is 1275488 -
so that appears to be ok.

The memory is 522732k with c117500k free. The kernel memory is total
c92792, paged c69780, nonpaged c23000.

Any thoughts?

MANY THANKS

Connor

These figures are actually unusually low"The total is c55000, the peak
is c61000"! I am assuming you have used c as meaning circa.

What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System log in
Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi Gerry

Sorry my slow response I have been away.

Thanks for your help:
There are no warnings or errors for today's boot (1st October) in the System
and Application logs.

The System log has no errors for previous boots either.

The Application log has 1 repeated Warning that occurs frequently:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 27/09/2007
Time: 22:29:39
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: USER-009C03DF2D
Description:
Windows saved user USER-009C03DF2D\Owner registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

It also has the following Errors in previous boots:

Unless Error Reports repeat there are not usually worth investigation.
Many problems can be resolved by restarting the computer.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

This will help with Event ID: 1517

Please let me know if others repeat.

Norton Anti-Virus if scanning takes a fair amount of memory and CPU. So
much so that many users have dumped Norton (and McAfee) for freeware
having a lesser footprint. Check to see whether the slowness coincides
with Norton running a full scan. Scan of course scheduled tasks.
