SLOWER XP OS

Despite following guidance from many sites (clean disk, defrag, spyware,
delete autostarts, unused programs) my computer is getting slower and slower.
"My Computer" takes several minutes (watching waving flashlight) to display
my drives.
Should I restore my XP Pro OS? and what is the best way to repair the OS?
