slower than slow, help needed

T

TRABEM

My punchbox is slower 'n molasses on a cold winter morn.

System is a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, XP Home, 2.3 Ghz with 256 MB of
ram, harddrive is 30 GB with only 10 GB in use. I have 2 users on the
system, both with administrative privileges. We always log off when
switching users, so the problem is not due to another users programs
running.

We have all the Microsoft updates and only use the stock Windows
firewall. We have DSL and our download speed is slower than our
neighbors..we've swapped modems and computers......the 30 percent
slower download speed is due to something in the computer itself and
shows up as a data light that does not stay continuously lit during a
download....it stops for 5 or 6 seconds every minute, then resumes.
Again, we've confirmed that our neighbors system does not act like
this (same ISP).

I have Norton SystemWorks, which is a virus checker. I use adaware,
have purged the startup folder so no applications run at startup now.
I've stripped the software down to the bare minimum, taking out some
software that insists on occupying resources by running in the system
tray (notification area). I've taken out all the Dell specific utility
programs as recommended by independent sources familiar with the Dell
setups.

Sometimes when I boot, it's so slow that it gives me notices that so
and so system program couldn't start and wants me to send a
notification to Bill G. The same thing happens often when I shut down,
or during routine use.

I often use an electronic circuit simulator called Spice, which is
very computationally demanding and it has a crude banchmark in it for
speed. Guys with old win 98 systems and 600 Mhz processors run the
benchmark faster than I do. According to the Dell forum, mine is
dreadfully slow (compared to other Inspiron 1100 series users).

I've defragmented the harddrive to death (almost), a freshly
defragmented drive shows a slight improvement......but it's not the
problem. I've cleaned the internet temporary files, the cache and the
internet history shortcuts.

Norton one button checkup software often finds an activex error in the
registry, and fixes it......OBC and Win Doctor do not find problems.

There is one hint, which might be meaningful (or maybe not). When I
attempt to run Norton Disk Doctor, the software tells me that "the
operating system or another process has exclusive access to this drive
or some of it's files. NDD cannot continue with the repair under these
conditions. A repair can be scheduled to occur the next time you
restart your system".

When I tell it to perform the reset and scan, it does a dos scan,
finds no errors and restarts windows.

If I rei-nitiate Norton Disk Doctor, I get the same error
message......over and over, etc.

Norton website does not suggest any remedial action for this problem.
Dell has nothing but blank stares, kinda like Radio Shack employees do
when they don't have an answer:>:

Honestly, the computer is nearly worthless, my 1 Ghz win 98 desktop
runs circles around this new Dell laptop.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Art

Celeron?
Ick if so - that will make a lot of things seem slower right there.

Updated the drivers for the NIC? Tried a PCMCIA NIC from someone else -
wireless even?

You do some things.. Not enough - but some. That's good.
Norton SystemWorks may be using up some of your valuable resources though.
Sometimes when I boot, it's so slow that it gives me notices that so
and so system program couldn't start and wants me to send a
notification to Bill G. The same thing happens often when I shut down,

That's not slowness, that's other problems.
Ran any CHKDSKs?

I've defragmented the harddrive to death (almost), a freshly
defragmented drive shows a slight improvement......but it's not the
problem. I've cleaned the internet temporary files, the cache and the
internet history shortcuts.

That's good. Could be a hardware issue. Bad RAM, bad hard drive, etc.
Have you flashed the BIOS? Upgraded all the hardware drivers? (NOT from
Microsoft - from DELL in this case.)
Norton one button checkup software often finds an activex error in the
registry, and fixes it......OBC and Win Doctor do not find problems.

Ick. One-Button Checkups.

No - you have Windows XP and likely NTFS - it guards the file system.
When I tell it to perform the reset and scan, it does a dos scan,
finds no errors and restarts windows.

Well, that's good and answers the question about the CHKDSK.

I would wipe it. Back it up first and then wipe it and return it to the day
you bough it status. Dell can help you do that.
SP2 it before ever connecting it to any Internet.

Then see how it reacts. If you can bring it back to "as sold" status and it
is still defective - Dell will replace things on it - if under warranty.
Who knows - could have a bad memory module, bad motherboard, bad hard drive,
or just lots of spyware. heh

Not a lot of RAM memory installed. Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task
Manager and select the Process Tab.
What is the Commit Charge? Two figures divided by backslash.

Copies of the error messages from Event Viewer might be helpful.

Hope this helps.

Not necessarily slow. And only for those applications which are
extremely CPU intensive and those are quite few in number.

SPICE - mentioned above - would be mathematically intensive. =)
I know I had once bought a celeron because it was a cheap package deal.. So
I could edit video..
I just went ahead and replaced the motherboard/CPU as soon as I got it..
*grin*

I'm not saying that is his only problem, and in his many posts I have made
several suggestions.. But the OP should be aware that the celeron is
cheaper for a reason. =)

Thanks Gerry,

When I look att he performance tab, it shows 260 MB orf ram in
use..which sounds about right to me (even with some programs running).

The 'system idle process' at the bottom of the Processes tab screen
varies between 91 and 98........which I think means the processor
isn't heavily utilized.

I can't find the 'commit charge' you refer to...... But, there is a
Commit Charge on the Performance tab, which says 235K total, 640K
limit and 274K peak.

I don't know about the error messages from the Event
Viewer..........but, I'll see if I can find some info about it in the
help file.

Some are saying 'reinstall', some say the problem is lack of ram. I'd
feel alot better knowing that these suggestions would fix the
problem....but without an indication or any basis for these steps, I'd
like to really know what hte problem is before I start adding hardware
and/or wipe the hard drive.

I'll try to get some info on the event viewer and see how to look up
error messages.

Thanks,

T

Go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest and run the tests there to check
out your service. You could have a problem with the service itself.

Norton SystemWorks is pretty much guaranteed to make your system
perform comparable to driving a car with both feet on the brake pedal.
Do yourself and your computer a favor and get an alternative product.

possible problems with your computer.

As stated above, ditching Norton would be my first suggestion.

You did not mention anything about antispyware software. A couple of
fairly easy and inexpensive options.
1. Go to MVP Jim Eshelman's Spyware Quick Fix page at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and follow the steps described
there.
or
2. Download and install the free Beta version of Microsoft
Antispyware from http://download.microsoft.com - note that this is
Beta software and one definition of Beta software is "too full of bugs
to be released". However the Microsoft Antispyware Beta version works
very well for a large number of users, although some have had
problems.

Also 256 mb of RAM is fairly minimal for Windows XP on a heavily used
system. Check for the possible benefits of adding additional RAM with
the free Page File Usage utility written by MVP Bill James from
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm or from
http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks/

If that utility shows actual page file usage of 50 mb or more on a
regular basis then that is indicative of fairly significant paging
file activity. Adding more RAM will reduce or even eliminate entirely
this activity thereby improving performance.

Are you using the notebook on battery or do you have the power adapter
plugged in? Most notebooks drop into "low gear" (reduced CPU speed
etc) when running on battery so as to prolong the battery life.

Also go into the BIOS setup and ensure that the CPU speed etc. is
configured correctly according to the factory spcs. I have seen some
computers delivered where the CPU and RAM were running at reduced
speeds because the BIOS was configured manually and values were
incorrect.

Good luck

If you have a way of making a clone image of your system (Norton Ghost,
Acronis TrueImage) - then you could clone the drive elsewhere - reinstall -
if it makes no difference - clone it back the way it was.

Yup. And when I did my last upgrade on my own system my choices for
CPU, based on affordability, were either a 1.7 ghz Celeron or a very
much slower (1.2 ghz?) Pentium III. I opted for the Celeron and have
never regretted it.
