Slow W2K on NT4 Peer Network

John John

I've tried on the NT group and on the W2K Networking group but no one
seems to have an idea or suggestion so I'll try here.

The problem:

On a small static address TCP/IP peer network, 2 NT4 machines & 1 W2K,
all the machines are visible everywhere. The 2 NT4 machines access and
browse each other very fast. The W2K machine accesses and browses the
NT4's very quickly, but the NT4's take forever to access and browse the
W2K. Any ideas why the NT4's would be so slow in accessing the W2K?

have you got netbios over tcp/ip enabled and wins server configured?

Yes, netbios over tcp/ip enabled and wins server is configured on all
the machines.

The strange thing is that even while at the W2K machine, and when
browsing the network through the Network Neighborhood "tree" the W2K
machine sees the NT4's faster than it sees itself. Double clicking or
expanding one of the NT4's yields quasi instant shared resources but
double clicking or expanding the W2K machine itself takes about 10 to 15
seconds to show resources on the very pc itself. If I exit Explorer and
try again the "little whirling flashlight" starts again every time and
it takes another 10 to 15 seconds for W2K to see itself. While at the
NT4's they see each others resources almost instantly but it takes them
about 2 to 3 minutes to find and see the W2K shared resources.

The NIC connectivity test yields 100Mbps speed all over. Ping times to
W2K from NT4 shows <10ms . NT4's are SP6a and W2K is SP4. Maybe a
patch of some sort missing? Or a service that should start isn't
starting? Most intriguing... and annoying!
