Slow Temp File Reloads

Hi All,

Anyone know how to solve slow reloading of previously visited web pages?
For example, IE SP2 keeps a history of pages that I visit and a cache of
temporary internet files. And yet when I want to go back to any of these
pages, it takes as long to reload them as it did to originally open them,
and in many cases longer. I thought that the cached pages were supposed to
reload quickly, since they are in the temp file cache.

Here are my settings:

1. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition, 3 GHz, 1GB RAM.
2. I have a fast cable modem connection.
3. I'm using all the default IE settings, including those for temporary
internet files and cookies, and I clear the cache on a regular basis.
4. I'm allowing 500MB of disk space for temporary file storage, although
the amount of space doesn't seem to affect the reload speed.
5. I am using the setting "Automatically check for newer versions of stored
pages" (the default setting), but the other settings (including "Never check
for newer versions of stored pages") don't seem to help.
6. I am running the Windows firewall, and AVG antivirus. I regularly scan
for virus and spybots.
7. As an experiment, I shut down all background apps including AVG, but it
didn't help.

How can I speed up the reloads? I don't recall having this problem with
older versions of IE.

Thanx,

Hi,
500 MB is a very large cache. Searching that large cache and checking the
timestamp of cached files may be slowing IE down.

I would set the cache to, at most, 60-70 MB. See if that speeds things up.

Or, try deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder. It may be corrupted or
may
have an unnecessarily large index.dat file. Login as administrator or
another user with admin privileges to delete the TIF folder from Windows
Explorer.
