We have a machine that starts quickly until it opens windows. The first icon
is seen in the quick start bar and then it takes forever to load the rest of
the programs. Once the machine is working it works very quickly as it's a
newish dual 4.4ghz processor running XP home with 1GB of ram.
Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks in anticipation.

There is definitely something in the startup programs that is delaying things. Try disabling all of these programs and then adding them back, one at a time and testing to see which one is causing the problems. An educated guess would be an anti-virus program that is set to perform a scan on every boot. See the section in the following article on how to troubleshoot problems with Windows startup problems.
