Slow start up IE7 closes and icons disappearing

Jon

Hi Can anyone please help with this problem. I run Zonealarm pro and it
advised me that I had the win32:/zlob trojan. Using various freeware and and
advice from various websites I think I have removed it sucessfully?? However,
the pc now takes about 4 minutes to load my settings at startup. Also when I
use IE7 randomly on clicking a link IE just closes without warning. Finally,
if I go to startlrunlbrowse and click on any icon in the browse window all
the icons disappear for about 30 seconds then reappear. Then if I click ok on
the run box this goes blank for about 30 seconds and then appears with the
run line as selected. I am not sure what I may have done getting rid of the
trojan but have lots of anti spyware and other tools download. Hope someone
can help please. Thank you

Thanks very much for taking the time to help me. I followed the first steps
no viruses found. I have identified the IE7 add on causing the problems and
disabled it. Both IE7 and the PC start up perform better now. My only
remaining problem is when I go to start>>run>>browse>>mydownloads and select
any program file, all the icons in the browsing window disappear for about 30
seconds and then the window closes and the run line appears. If during the
30 seconds I press ctrl alt del. they appear within a few seconds of doing
so. Strangely, if I do the same but select desktop and not mydownloads I
don't have this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated thank you.

Hi Jon, can you tell me what this Add-ons that was the culprit in your case
please?.

can you let me know if any error messages in the event Viewer!.
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.

Thank you

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256
Scan for malware from here:
SuperAntispyware - Free

Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine (offline scanner):

After the scan run disk cleanup on your drive.

2- Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
http://www.merijn.org/index.php
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis) is
the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.

f the above doesn't help, back up your data try the info below:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
If you will go with Repair install please uninstall IE7 first then perform
the Repair, as your XP CD which you will perform the Repair from doesn't
contain IE7.

Let us know how it is going.
