slow shutdown

Something curious happened the other day. My core-duo running XP Home SP2
with all critical updates has always shut down in about 8 seconds, which was
much to my liking as it indicated (to me, anyway) an efficiently running
system.
Now it routinely takes 15-20 seconds to shut down.
1) tried system restore from Safe Mode to a date a few days previous--no
change
2) checked msconfig for new startup services -- nothing different
What baffles me is I essentially have changed nothing, save for a color
change in display properties and I think MS had altered their Windows
Update, requiring a download there.

Any ideas?

did you recently download and install patches or drivers from Windows
Update?

Yes, a small IE 7 update (can't recall what it was called) but when I used
system restore
to revert back to a date prior to the problem, the update icon reappeared.
I am also preparing to install SP3 -- wonder if that might solve it.

Actually the installation of SP3 corrected the problem
(overwrote some nasty little dll or something)
But I have downloaded UPH for future reference...Thanks
I am the only user on this system, so is UPH still viable?

Your profile gets gets saved when you log off/shutdown. If you are still
seeing slow shutdowns logoffs, go ahead and install it.

The readme file said that a good clue was the "saving your settings" portion
of the shutdown.
My "saving your settings" lasts less than a second or two.
