Slow Shutdown

Windows takes a long time to shut down, and I cannot find a way to fix it.
Here are the symptoms and what I've done to date to fix the problem.

I have Windows XP Home.

The Microsoft Windows XP welcome-exit screen comes up, saying "Windows is
Shutting Down" and hangs for (no joke) 60-120 seconds, then shuts down.

It happens whether I choose "Turn Off" or "Restart".

It happens whether I am shutting down from full Windows or from Safe Mode.

It happens from a clean boot as well.

I have run numerous anti-virus scans [Norton, TrendMicro, BitDefender, etc.]
and found nothing.

I used Norton DiskDoctor, and it could not proceed through "Security
Descriptors" and "File Data".

I have tried using Recovery Console. I used CHKDSK, and got a message
saying one or more sectors could not be fixed. I then used FIXMBR, but got
an error message to the effect that FIXMBR detected a "non-standard or
invalid Master Boot Record ...", and I chose not to proceed, not knowing
whether this would damage my computer.

I am concerned that I have a bad sector or two on my Hard Disk, but the disk
is brand new (December 2005 -- Seagate 100GB) so I want to eliminate other
possibilities.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you're running the 32-bit version of XP, then try downloading/installing
the uphclean utility from microsoft. It forces applications that want to
hold on to the user hive (profile) of the registry at shutdown to let go.

I used the UPHClean, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Remember, as
I wrote in my initial post, the point at which the computer hangs during
shutdown is "Windows is Shutting Down", not at the earlier point where it
says "Saving Settings" which is where (I guess) the profile settings are
being dumped.

I did try the "Super Fast Shutdown" as suggested by Smoker, and it works
great, but I'm wondering what it actually does in order to achieve that.
What functions is it sidestepping?

Do you have it clearing the pagefile at shutdown?
Undo that.

ClearPageFile is set to "0" in the registry. I had read the other "Slow
Shutdown" posts and tried those fixes before I posted my own. Sorry, I
should have stated that in my original post.
