Windows takes a long time to shut down, and I cannot find a way to fix it.
Here are the symptoms and what I've done to date to fix the problem.
I have Windows XP Home.
The Microsoft Windows XP welcome-exit screen comes up, saying "Windows is
Shutting Down" and hangs for (no joke) 60-120 seconds, then shuts down.
It happens whether I choose "Turn Off" or "Restart".
It happens whether I am shutting down from full Windows or from Safe Mode.
It happens from a clean boot as well.
I have run numerous anti-virus scans [Norton, TrendMicro, BitDefender, etc.]
and found nothing.
I used Norton DiskDoctor, and it could not proceed through "Security
Descriptors" and "File Data".
I have tried using Recovery Console. I used CHKDSK, and got a message
saying one or more sectors could not be fixed. I then used FIXMBR, but got
an error message to the effect that FIXMBR detected a "non-standard or
invalid Master Boot Record ...", and I chose not to proceed, not knowing
whether this would damage my computer.
I am concerned that I have a bad sector or two on my Hard Disk, but the disk
is brand new (December 2005 -- Seagate 100GB) so I want to eliminate other
possibilities.
Any help would be appreciated.
