Looking at at Dell Dimension 8200 (P4/1.7GHz + 256KM mem) for a friend whose
says it appeared slow in operation e.g opening applications such as word etc.
I've done usual - virus checking (OK), spyware etc (cleaned up), removed
"unwanted " programs, ran msconfig to reduce startup item, washed, optimised
and defraged. Applications now appear to open in a more acceptable time.
Only problem I'm now having is the length of time 1 -2 mins or more that the
PC takes to shut done or restart. Initially I thought it had frozen but
having waited it eventually did one or the other depending on what I chose.
Any ideas on why so long and how they can be speeded up ???

Response appreciated.....

Downloaded and installed. Not seen in program list so assume sits and runs
at boot ??? No matter on restart still same. From point on having "windows
shutting down" message on screen till this disappears is just short of 1m
45s. Did re-install (repair) but exactly same on restart - 1m 45s

Any further ideas greatly appreciated.

1 Minute 45 Sec is a bit slow, have you checked the System &
Application logs for any errors ? Sometimes the shutdown can
be slow waiting on Applications/Services to terminate. Certain
applications or combination of apps will cause shutdown issues.
Here's an excellent troubleshooting guide for Shutdown problems:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

I had a similar problem and the culprit was that the settings in the
registry were set to wipe the swap file so windows was taking a long time to
shut down due to that process. I changed it and the shutdown decreased
dramatically

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management.

Look on the right side for: ClearPageFileAtShutdown and modify it to 0 (not
to clear the page file.

I am not sure if this is the problem you are experiencing but have a look.

Here's a page that helped me a lot with the same problem
recently:

In my case it turned out to be Roxio.

Thankyou for your response. I've booked marked url for future reference. if
interested in resolution please see my reply to SII who also responded.

SSI,

Not quite brilliant! but almost. Did as you advised, Had to modify entry
to 0 (not to clear). Restarted but still same. Looedk at registry entry
again and modified the entry "DisablePagingExecutive" from 0 to 1. Time from
seeing "logging off" to restart is now 9 secs. Checked against another XP
machine to confirm if settings now correct - they are.

Thankyou very much. Apparently my friend has said this problem has existed
since they bought the machine!?! They overcome the problem by pulling the
plug!. Not anymore, wonderful. Thanks.

Glad I was able to help.
