Slow server response

I teach at Tennessee State University and try to put most
of what little I know on the Web. The university has us
editing our Web sites directly with FrontPage and does not
allow FTP access because of security concerns.

The main server increasingly has an impossibly slow,
sometimes nonexistent response. I've just logged on, for
example, and then I tried a test "Save As," and it's been
hanging with a white screen and a blank Save As box in the
middle. More often, I can't even get the logon password
dialog. But at times (last Friday and Sunday), I got
pretty good response and was able to efficiently update
some pages and add others.

I know that at least part of the problem is that I have
too many files and/or too many people are using the server
and/or the server is too slow. The IT people, however,
are unable to give me any specific analysis. Does
Microsoft publish any hardware guidelines and/or directory
size guidelines for editing FrontPage directly? Can
anyone suggest any analytical tools which would at least
tell me that the physical limits are X, and we're
exceeding them by Y, so we need to move everything to a
different server?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Thanks -- have you used these tools? What kind of info
will they reveal?

Try these 2 steps:

Delete the cached (and possibly corrupted) copies of your webs - Close
FrontPage, and do a Find | Files and Folders | Named *.web, and delete them.

Delete your FrontPage Temporary Files - With FP running and your web open,
Tools | Web Settings | Advanced, delete Temporary files.

I've used some of that companies tools. not much on the server stuff
because I'm blessed with good admins.
there are complete descriptions on the page where you can download them.

Thanks -- You're suggesting these steps for the server
administrator, right? (That's where the problem seems to
be -- even the university webmaster has trouble accessing
the site). Is the second step you suggest something I do
on my client?

Thanks again,

P.S.: Do you know anything about the software that Chris
Leeds suggests I try?
