Check out the Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. XP has a number
of services that will load at startup and you can learn about those here
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm Be cautious about what you
turn off or disable.

You can also see some of the programs that are running by going to
Start->Run and type MSCONFIG then click OK and look under the Startup Tab.

Which programs *should* be running at startup depends, in part, in which
programs you have installed. Here is a comprehensive list of startup
programs and the applications that they are associated with

You may also go to Start>>>Run and type msconfig. Then go
to your startup tab. These show actually what is started
everytime you boot. You may turn these off. Also check
for adware/spyware. This is the number one cause of
computer bottlenecking. The second is hard disk
fragmentation.
