slow performance

Hi! I have a portable machine here running xp prof. with 40 gb hard drive,
celeron CPU 2.8 and 512MB ram. The machine show unacceptable performance I
formatted the hard drive and do a clean isntallation of OS with SP2 but no
improvement of the performance. any Idea out there please. thanks for your
help.
