Slow operating system

i've had XP Home since I got my computer and I'm pretty
shocked at how slow it is (opening & switching between
programs, booting up, etc.), in comparison to my Windows
98 OS at work. any ideas on how to speed things up or is
this just a piece of junk?

No it is not 'just a piece of junk'. You don't say how much memory you have,
type and speed of system, virus detect programs etc. etc. How can anyone help?

What processor >400mhz?
