Slow opening files across the network

I am looking at a setup which has 3 pcs running xp home across a network.
The network is created via an adsl wired modem/router.
1 of the pcs is used for the general file storage which are accessed from
the other 2 pcs.
One of these 2 pcs can access and open/close the files very quickly - ie
opening either word or excel files without any difficulty.
The other pc however will open the files but can take up to 5 minutes to
open even the smallest file - the same applies when trying to save them over
the network - very slow indeed.
As far as I can tell the pcs are setup the same but I cannot work out why
one of them is so slow at opening/saving files across the network.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

John,

I'd start by looking at the name resolution and protocols used.

And make sure that NetBT is consistently set.

Then I'd look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and try to diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(download browstat!):
