Slow Network Browsing Between Windows XP and Windows 2000 Server

My office uses Windows 2000 as the file/print server and the majority of
clients are running WinXP (there are still few Win98 PCs). I noticed it takes
long (around 15 sec) for WinXP PCs browsing network drives mapped from the
W2K server, but it's much quicker for Win98 machines to browse those network
drives. It would be very appreciated if you can advise what is the cause and
how to resolve this issue. Tks a lot!!

The first thing to check is your DNS settings - are the Windows XP clients
looking at the network DNS server for name resolution and nowhere else?

Check that default gateway is not set to any invalid address.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, we specify the IP address of the DNS server (we
use Cisco CNR for dns/dhcp services, not using the windows ones) in the
networking property for all WinXP clients. The slow network browsing occurs
at the first time when the WinXP user open Windows Explorer to browse
contents (folders & files) of the network drives (we use net use to map W2K
shared folders as network drives).

Thanks for your advice. We do not assign static IP addresses for PCs, both
WinXP and Win98 PCs acquire IPs from the dhcp server and have the same
configuration.
