Hi Weasel

I am no expert when it comes to 21st century technology.

It seems you are having hardware conflicts. Check your device manager is
not showing any conflicts. If it does then you solve the problem one by
one. Then run error checking on your c:\ drive (boot drive), My Computer >
right click c: drive > properties > tools and check for error on your boot
drive.

If this does not get you anywhere then please read what the professionals
(MVP) have to advise you re the solutions. Don't give up hope. All is well
that ends well. Sometimes it helps to play daft than know it all ..... do
you know what I mean !!

I never thought I'd be posting in a forum about XP. For ages I've
prided myself about being able to maintain it by myself. They say
pride come before a fall...

Ok, here very humbly I'll set out what's wrong with the beast.

XP sp2
Emachines, generally cheap PC.

When I start up, sometimes it doesn't even recognise that I'm moving
the mouse or typign on the keyboard. Other times it starts up okay-ish
but then the pointer gets slower and slower as I move it about and only
gets about four inches before the system freezes and wont take input
again. Interestingly, it's not 'freezing' per-se, as I had a webpage
open straight away in a bid to get onto here, (I'm on another computer
now) and my hompage has a scrolling marquee and whilst my PC wouldn't
take input from me, the scroller was still going fine in the
background.
Other times, when I attempt to type, it gives me the error bleep much
like you'd get if you pressed too many keys at once.

I haven't modified the registry recently, downloaded anything suspect
recently or anything like that. (Notice I say recently, I'm not ruling
anything out!)

What's confusing is that sometimes it won't take any input at all other
times it's a bit better before freezing.

I've changed keyboards and both work for a second until they freeze.

When it refuses to take any input, it's even the same at startup, when
I have a floppy disk in the drive and it tells me to press any key
(where's the anykey!? Oh, I was I was Homer Simpson at the moment
instead of me!) and wont even let me type then.

So, anyone have any ideas?????? I humbly ask you.
