slow media player; mp3s and cds

installed cd player from WinME as could not get WMPv9 to
play. (not assigned as first player, Doh!)
Since then very slow playing on Music Box(OEM with DVD)
and on WMPv9.

Cannot get WMP to change the playback speed.
what do I check for next?
