Slow Logoff for domain user

L

Leigh Bennett

When i logoff from the network it takes ages to shut down
the laptop. The message displays 'Saving Your Settings'
for about 3-4 minutes before finally displaying 'Windows
is shutting down' and even that takes a minute or two.

The strange thing is that i logged on to the machine using
the administrator credentials and when i went to shutdown
it only took seconds to do so. Which is how i want it.

What could be causing my machine to hang when i logoff
from a domain environment? Im using w2k SP4, all updates
applied.

Thanks in advance.

goto Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs > Change/Remove Programs
and see if Q329170 is listed as an update if it is remove it.

plus

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

There appears to be a hotfix available from MS (thanks Neo)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814770

but you will have to telephone MS to order it.

Thanks for the info Steve.

I do not have Q329170 installed at all, or its not listed
in Add/Remove Progs as Q329170.
And have checked the gpedit.msc and the Max Retry setting
is already enabled and set to 5. But the problem still
occurs.

Where does Windows save its settings when logging off?
Perhaps thats the problem because, as i said, when i
logoff as Administrator the machine shuts down instantly.
Is there a way of checking this settings file to see if
its corrupted or something?

Does you have any other ideas?

this is often a registry hive staying open .....

just before shutdown
try
Start
Run
type
net stop spooler
click OK

now try shutting down

Have tried that a few days ago, after finding that MS
article in another post. Again it didnt work.
I will try it again now though, just to double check.

Any more?....lol

It must be something to do with the settings file or
access to it. I might just delete my \Documents and
settings\~username~ folder and start a fresh. Its
definately something contained within these files thats
causing the problem. I can logon as other users in the
domain and my laptop shuts down perfectly. Even if i logon
locally as Admin, it shuts down fine.

Thanks for your help, very much appreciated.

If you have any more suggestions please dont hesitate to
reply!

PS did you call MS for the fix mentioned in my first post. The
fix is free.

Just tried the 'net stop spooler' and it made no
difference.

This is really bugging me now......

I did try the 'net stop spooler' fix you told me about but
i didnt call MS for the fix because if it didnt work when
i done it manually it shouldnt make any difference
applying the fix should it ?

Hi Leigh,

Some of our users used to have the same problem when they are logging off,
took too long. In our case is that they have profile stored on the network,
when they are logging off, trying to save their settings to the network
including personal settings, offline files and etc, that could be huge info.
So I decided to stop them using network profile, just use local profile,
that works. Hope this helps you.

Is there a roaming profile being used? I have seen this kind of behavior
caused by thing such as the internet temp folder being very large.
