What hardware are you running? And is this a recent behavior or has it
always been like this?

Basicly, provide this Processor: Make +Speed
RAM: How Much
This will help seperate the "you have a slow computer" issues from "there
are some settings screwed up" issues.

While we're here, Take a look at the event logs. Are there any errors,
warnings around the login time?

And you way want to defrag for good measure, if it's been a long while
since the last time.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Well, it doesn't seem to be the hardware. The workstation
is a Dell, Pentium 4, 1.3GHz.

I only joined the PC to the Win2K server today. All
along, it has been part of an NT server and had no such
slow login problem.

About the event log, here is what I came across:
==========
The system failed to register network adapter with
settings:
Adapter Name : {70A89882-9342-4B47-8F2C-0EB5C25A7CC1}
Host Name : PC1
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : w2kserver.net
DNS server list :
24.25.227.32, 24.25.227.34
Sent update to server : None
IP Address(es) :
192.168.2.51
===========

Thanks again
Gail

WELL....First of all if you have a slow computer try
Terminal Services...!!(It will work on even slowest
compters)Of cource you have to make your server a terminal
application Server.(You need licence)

Second you are not telling us from where you log on!!!!!
Your network might be <<slow>>.(From a remote office,using
VPN , using remote access utilities or you are on the same
switch or hub...????)
GIVE MORE INFO.!Including the type of your computer -
client.

Agreed. This is sufficient.

This brings up the possibility of the problem is at the server. Then again,
if the win2k server has other workstations w/ no problems it suggests not
(ask your coworkers, you'd be supprized how often the minor irrititations
go unreported). It is possible that this is a one time occurance with the
new server, and subsequent logins will be faster. Have you logged in
multiple times today, or just the one time?

I would focus here:
Go into the device manager, and check to see that your network adapter is
working properly. (It probly is, if the network was usable after login.)
Also, look for any other devices that are marked with warnings or errors.

Try seeing if updated drivers are availible and install them if so. Also
consider reinstalling your current ones.

Look in your network settings and make sure they're configured properly.
Note: "properly" depends almost entirely on your situation. Can't help you
here.

Thanks again

Thanks folks for your inputs.

Paul: I just finished setting up the W2K server - brand
new. My workstation is the first one - the only one.

Subzero: All are on the same switch.

This is gonna be tough, but it looks like you're gonna have to troubleshoot
in both places.

The same suggestions I gave for the workstation also apply to the server.

I'll be gone for about a week. So this my final word on this issue. There
are many other gurus here. So you can still reply to the thread with a
reasonable hope of a response. Good luck.

Ok, If your software is working fine....then you should try
the hardware.

CHECK the Lan card of your Client machine.Clean it.
Change your Patch Core Cable to the Switch.Change port to
switch.
If this dosen^t work
make a cross cable and connect the two computers directly.
GOOD LUCK.!
