Slow Login On Windows XP

I have setup a windows 2003 domain server with DHCP and
DNS. My problem is that when I log onto the domain with
Windows XP, it can take several minutes. Does anyone have
any suggestions ?

Hi,

Make sure that your XP clients are only configured to
point to your 2003 server for DNS, and not any external
ISP DNS server.

I have checked that and they are only pointing to the
Windows 2003 DNS Server. When I manually enter the DNS
then the login time is greatly improved but with DHCP
shouldnt the client get the DNS settings from the DHCP
server. At work we have a windows NT 4.0 domain and the
ip address of the DNS server is gotten from the DHCP
server and login is still fast. Any ideas ?

No I dont. That sounds like the problem. Where do I
configure this option.

Thanks

Yes, the client will get DNS from DHCP - but only if you
have configured an "Option" for it.

To do this, in Windows 2003, launch DHCP from
Administrative tools

Expand the server, then the "Scope" for your IP address
range.

Right Click the "Scope Options" folder, and
choose "Configure Options" Scroll down to "006 DNS
Server" (NOT 005 name servers), place a tick in the box,
and fill in the details.

You will then need to run an ipconfig / renew on your
clients to refresh them - or right click the network
connection and choose "repair" (XP) May be easier and
more consistent if you just reboot the clients.

Hope this helps,

Martin
