Slow loading the drives drop down menu on win xp

I have two XP machines with this problem. In any application that has a
"Look in:" drop down box (like Outlook when adding an attachment), when the
drop down is selected the applicaation freezes for 30 seconds or so. If one
uses the "My Computer" or "My Network Places" buttons on the left toolbar
they pop right open. I am baffled and don't want to pay Experts Exchange $99
to maybe find out the answer.

R-click on and pick disconnect for any drives which are unavailable in
in My Computer.
