Slow installing/removing software

I've searched high and low for a solution to this, so
please forgive me if it's been answered.

Whenever I go to add or remove software on XP Home, the
installations/removals take FOREVER.

Anyone else have this problem?

may have too many other progs running, and some don't
wanta leave. less trouble in safe mode.
