I have been having problems with my PC slowing up, so I bit the bullet and
bought a new hard drive and a new copy of Windows XP (previously had been an
upgrade of 98). I have tried to load the new XP and everything seemed to be
going okay until the formatting got to 88%. It has now been going for 6 hrs
and has only reached 91%. I have left it to run but can anyone tell me if
this is normal or if not what could the possible causes be?

Could be a bad hard disk drive.

Visit the hard disk drive manufacturer's web page and download their
diagnostics utility and test your hard disk drive.
