slow folder navigation

Hi,

I have a 2ghz, 2gb memory, 160gb (partitioned) HD, Windows XP pc but it
reached a near-full HD episode and since then, even after freeing the HD up,
it does a very annoying thing, which is what I want to try and solve here.

Basically, once you're in your folders (whatever folders in My Computer, My
Documents...), it takes a minute average to load the contents of the folder
up in each step. It used to be immediate but now it seems like giving birth
to a baby every time you navigate through your folders and this is extremely
annoying.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I've defraged it, cleaned it up,
freed up half of the HD, scanned for spyware, viruses, everything a
not-so-layman person could do. But it stll does that...

Could anyone shed a light on this for me? I'm starting to think it's
hardware... like cooling? dust? power supply? or if software... would it be a
crowded registry? some thing missing? I don't know... HELP!)

Thanks for reading!

What exactly is "a near-full HD episode" and what caused the episode to
occur?
