I am experiencing a very, very slow explorer.exe anytime I either
first open it up or change the directory I am looking in.

Is explorer trying to reconnect to my mapped drives at every explorer
directory change? How can I Change my system so that it doesn't try
to reconnect at every directory change if that is the case?

I am an admin on my laptop but not an admin on the domain where the
decision to create those mapped drives are made.

Any time I work from home this is a problem. At home I have a
wireless firewall with dsl and no connection to my domain. (I think I
am using a cached version of my domain credentials at this point)

Any help on speeding up explorer.exe at home would be appreciated. :)

Clean out your pre-fetch folder:
a.. Open C(system drive):/windows/prefetch, delete those junk and obsolete
files, reboot. It is recommended that you do this every month

It is not. All that is doing is recording patterns of load of programs
so they can be loaded more quickly. Any that are not used for a week or
so have their entries removed, and only ones that are seriously used
enter into the optimisation. But it is silly to throw out the
optimisation
