my modem speed is 56k. my connection speed is 46.6. when I'm downloading
files, the transfer rate is down about 4 kb/sec. according to my performance
monitor, memory usage was about 1% of capacity, disk at .5% and cpu about
5%. the last place I was downloading from was Sun Microsystems (downloading
the Java tutorial 12.4 mb). (I'm sure they can handle any traffic I can
send their way.) can I speed up the transfer rate by tweaking the packet
size? Any other suggestions (besides getting rid of earthlink)?

That sure sound very good for dialup...If you want more,
spend the money for broadband.

Technically, you shouldn't be able to get speeds higher than 6KB/s or so on
a dialup, so it seems to me that 4KB/s is within normal operating speeds.

When I was on dialup I would loved to have had a rate of 4KB/sec. Mine was
usually about 2.1. On broadband I am getting a average of 160 KB/s.
