I have winXP Home/WSP3, when I boot up it take about 15-20 minutes to boot.
once I boot the computer works normally as it should. I have tried to disable
several start up items, but the computer still takes aover 15 minutes to boot
up. How can I lower boot up speed?

How long does the boot process take if you disable *all* the startup
items?

How long have you had this problem?

if I disable all in startup it boots fine. I have had this problem for about
a month now

Use msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) is the easiest/simplest way.
Disable one item at a time until you located the culprit.

If you want to dig deeper:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

I also use NAV and ad-aware. Will changing some entries in services.msc help
with faster boot up

There is a 'Services' tab in AutoRuns.

I have NAV and it does slow down the boot process, but not that much and on
this PC which is only a 933Mhz process all the junk that loads during the
boot process, it only takes less than 1 minute. I all also have AD-Aware but
it's not enabled during Windows startup.

I'm pretty sure that altering *most* services.msc won't result in any
noticeable change.

Both NAV and the Current version of AdAware are resource hogs
(especially the former). You should be able to go into the preferences
of both those programs to instruct them not to run at startup. Well, you
still would want Norton to run its resident protection, but there is no
need to have it also automatically download and install updated
definitions *and* scan your hard drive at every boot. Personally, I
think it's best to schedule these activities when you're not using your
PC (e.g., overnight).

You might also want to ditch Norton altogether and substitute with a
lighter alternative. Many are very happy with NOD32. If you want to try
something free, you can try AVG (then again, the newest version of AVG
seems to use more resources than earlier versions), Avast, or AntiVir.
While setting up your new AV program, be sure not to enable every
feature. For instance, e-mail scanning is a waste of resources. Also, I
find AVG's new Web link scanner intrusive. And be sure to configure the
downloading of updates and the scanning of drives the way *you* want it
done.

Regarding Ad Aware, you may indeed need to enter services.msc in order
to change aawservice.exe to manual or disabled.

To see what you do and don't want to run in msconfig, see:
