Slow boot up

Hope someone can help with my problem. I have a a Desktop computer runnung
Win XP home, 1.99GHz processor, 512Mb ram. When I turn the machine on I get
the Win XP splash screen for 2 mins 45 secs. The screen hasn't frozen
because the blue light/bar is moving left to right. Next I get a black
screen for about 45 secs. Then the 'Welcome' screen appears for another 45
secs. I then see my Medion desktop but no icons. After another 45 secs or so
the icons and quick launch icons appear plus the clock. After that it takes
about 9 or 10 minutes for all the icons to appear in the task bar. These
consist of and appear in this order: 'Safely remove hardware' icon, Avast
anti virus, Windows messenger, Microsoft anti spyware, Zone Alarm then the
wireless connection.
I have tested for viruses (running Avast in Safe mode) I have gone into
MSconfig and there is nothing untoward in there. I have updated the bios. I
have even taken the computer back to factory settings. I run spybot,
spywareblaster and adaware weekly. When everything is
loaded up the computer appears to work fine. It runs quickly with no
problems at all. I just haven't got a clue. Can anyone help please.
Many thanks
Dave

Hi .... Check to see whether your graphic card has a update driver from
the manufacturer

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? Is the drive
partitioned?

Have you run Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet Files and
selected System Restore on the More Options tab to remove all but the
latest restore point? Do you compact Outlook Express regularly? Having
done those tasks have you run Disk Defragmenter?

Have you studied the System tab in Event Viewer for Error Reports
covering the period of the boot and also examined it for clues as to
what is taking the time?

The anti-virus scan on start up can take some time. Have you tried
disabling it to see how much time that reduces the boot time?

You may wish to study the Article in this link:

I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers and unfortunately I still
have the same problem. Thanks anyway

Hi Gerry
My hard drive is 80Gb, partitioned into three drives (by manufacturer).
Plenty of space on hard drives. I regularly run disk cleanup, I also have
diskeeper installed.
Bear in mind that it's been a long time booting up even after I reinstalled
windows. A friend of mine has suggested it may be the motherboard. I will
certainly check out event viewer as you suggest and also read up on the
article in the link you sent but that may take me some time. Many thanks for
your input though.

What I would try is , unplug your computer from the power supply , Open your
case and clean out the dust from your processor and the power supply , What
I use is a small air compressor but I know you might not have this , try to
use something that blows air out , any ways try to find a way to clean it
out ...
