Slow Boot up

I've been viewing the posts about slow booting however
I'm not sure is everybody is having the same problem as I
am
XP boots as normal to the screen where you select the
user, once selected the desktop loads, however there is
no boot music for approx 2-3 minutes, during which time
no programs can be started. Once the boot music has
played programs can be started however Norton AV and
Firewall take a couple more minutes to load.
I have read the posts and visited symantec regarding the
certificate issues however I have had no problem
downloading updates to norton etc, the only issue that I
have had is that I cannot log onto certian secure sites
such as amazon.
I have also tried restoring my system settings to a point
prior to the last time I upgraded some software which was
DirectX 9 however this has still not solved the problem,
Any Ideas?

My system takes minutes to get past the screen with the loading bar that scrolls along, the one before the blue log on screen, then when the desktop finally loads the music is distorted and corrupted, I havent downloaded any new programs, and now my Nortons IS has said it needs to be reinstalled. May be we have the same problem.

Following on from the issue I have been having as
detailed below, I visited the symantec site and after
trying their first solution of downloading a new
certificate from verisign, this still didn't do the trick.

One thing I had noticed was that often norton AV and
Firewall wouldn't start or I would not be allowed access
to them, Symantec had a possible solution to this of
uninstalling and then re-installing the software.

So I did this and after first re-installing systemworks
and AV and finding that everything was fine for several
shutdowns and restarts, I reinstalled norton
firewall...and sure enough everything loads as if my PC
was running in treacle.

Moral is I will be un-installing firewall and finding an
alternative solution.

Beginning late December my computer (DELL Inspiron 8200
with 1,8GHz CPU (as I remember it), 512MB memory and
running Windows XP Home edition seems to spend a lot of
time in the boot process.

Previouosly I have the feeling that it took one or maximum
two minutes from power on till I had the user logon panel,
now it typically takes some four minutes.

The most noticeable difference from earlier is a long period
(140 seconds) between displaying the brief initial DELL
boot window and the Windows startup window during which
I have nothing but a black screen. (After about 40 seconods
of this period a progress bar is displayed across this black
screen near the bottom edge, that bar was very seldom seen
before).

The Windows XP startup window remains displayed for
about 55 seconds followed by another 25 seconds of black
screen until finally the logon windows is displayed.

All my thorough scans for disk problems, viruses, trojans
and what have you got have turned out negative. My disk
is completely defrag'ed.

I strongly suspect that this behavious is the result of a
Microsoft critical update announced in late December.
However, as I at almost the same time got some problems
apparently caused by a disk error I did not realize the
possible significance of such upgrade until I no longer
remember exactly what was done in what sequence.

This slow boot is annoying byt not critical to me.
However, I shall appreciate any information that can
tell me what is going on here.

regards Sven
