Slow Boot Up Time

G

Guest

It is now taking me a minute and fourty three seconds to reach the user click
box of my computer. After clicking on user it takes around two to three
minutes before I can access any program. I am running Windows 2000 with XP
Home and MSASpyware along with Avast for anti virus. I have done disc cleanup
and defragmented the system to no avail. Can some either tell me why it takes
so long to boot up when it was so much shorter a couple of weeks ago. I have
also checked for spyware malware and viruses and nothing is found.

In general, added ram will help with such issues, and if you can manage the
effort to determine what parts are needed and install it yourself, it is one
of the most cost-effective upgrades these days for many systems.

That begs the question of what is happening on your system, and whether it
indicates something is wrong, of course.

You mention both Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Home edition. Which is it--or
do you dual boot?

Are both Microsoft Antivirus and Avast up to date, in terms of definitions?
If, in Microsoft Antispyware, you go to Help, About, and press the
Diagnostics button--does the line ending in numbers like 142/142--display
equal numbers?

Have you made any changes to networking on this computer in that time? One
cause of long time lags at startup is a network interface set for automatic
IP addressing acquisition which has no server available on the connection to
provide that addressing.

Thanks Bill for your response to my questions and in reply I can tell you the
following, I am running XP Home, Avast and MSAS are as far as I know up to
date which I do on a daily basis. On looking at MSAS and your query I found
that under Definitions Increment Version = 138/142 they are not equal and
does this make a difference and how do I rectify it. The other info that I
have on my system is as follows whether it is of any use to you I don't know
but here it is anyway,
Volume Size=74.55GB - Cluster Size=4KB - Used Space=13.15GB
Free Space=61.40GB %age Free Space=82%
You also spoke about extra ram, I haven't a clue about those operations but
if you can guide me through what I must do I will gladly do it. Once again
thanks for your help.

Your Microsoft Antivirus definitions are not updated properly.

In general, I've been able to rectify this kind of appearance by doing File,
Check for updates within Microsoft Antispyware, and then checking, via Help,
about and then diagnostics--to see whether the operation really succeeded or
not. Until those two numbers are the same, each successive File, check for
updates will appear to repeat the definition update process.

There are cases in these forums, however, where a given user has great
difficulty getting this to happen as it should.

I'd see if you can get that first number to budge--give it several tries.
I'm not at all sure that is related to the boot time issue, but it could be,
I think.

Hi Bill, I did what you asked me and got the MSAS to read 144/144 then tried
a restart and it 's still the same. I have now removed Adobe, HPSC ( printer
scanner fax ) Avast, Kodak, MSAS, Mozilla and Winzip which now leaves me with
IE, XPHome and Windows 2000. I restart and yes you've guessed still the same,
I think I need to get into safe mode programs and delete the thing completely
and reload XPHome, but I don't know how to do it correctly, I'm scared I
don't do it properly and I sit with no system.

OK - that seems to me to let Microsoft Antispyware off the hook with regards
to the slow startup.

I wouldn't do anything too complex at this point--there are lots of possible
causes here, and something like reinstalling just for this problem is much
more than should be needed.

Let me go through the thread again later when I've got more time and see if
I can suggest anything simple--I don't think a reinstall is a good idea at
all.

Thanks Tom and Bill, I downloaded and installed Crap Cleaner which duly
removed all my temp files and still the system takes 1min 20secs to get from
start to user entry, then a further 2 mins to be able to log into the web,
that I can understand as the AVirus etc do there checks through the programs.
I have tried everything that is on the web about the slow boot up time and
everything I try ends up the same. I will await a reply from either of you or
someone else regards this issue, but thanks for the time and effort.

Hi Cams

You didn`t say whether or not you have run the `Issues` in CCleaner. This
will clean most (though not all) redundant entries in your registry. A
bloated registry is likely to extend your boot up time considerabley as well
as the processes/progs being loaded at startup, many of which you may not
need. Autoruns is a very useful utility (better than msconfig) for this
purpose which is available from www.sysinternals.com. Briefly, among other
things, it will show you what is being loaded together with a description of
what it does. You then have the option to assess and disable if necessary.

Cams,
There is a program "Windows Registry Repair" which has an option to
defragment the registry and also to clean any errors in the registry. No
guarantee but I think it might speed up your boot up time. Also, there are
conflicting views about never shutting your system down but that will solve
your problem. I never shut my system down and never have any problems. I
do have restarts whne down loading certain programs but the restarts are
quite fast.
I also use Reg Repair.

Hello all you great people, firstly Stu I downloaded Crap cleaner cleaned
everything in files and issues and went through the lot to no avail. Ira I
downloaded Registry Repair and ran it on the system and also no joy. Anything
else I could try, do any of you know how to delete the start up programs or
where I can find it on the web.

To get to the start menu and try what you want. Cliack on start the click
onexplore then click on programs on left hand list. This will show you all
the programs that are initiated at start. Take it from there and see if it
helps.

Hi there people, just to let you all know of my progress since we last
communicated, and it's not good or perhaps it is depends on how you look at
it. I have downloaded a multitude of things from Registry Repair which told
me I had 116 Errors which it finally erased down to 3, Window washer which
cleans windows funny enough, Clean Center which does things I'm unfamiliar
with so I don't touch as is the last one which is Start Up Monitor which I
also don't understand. So the good news is it looks like it's something other
than registry problems as the boot up time still remains the same. Then I
read somewhere and I can't remember where that the IP Address that my
computer searches for may have something to do with it taking so long to boot
up, but surely the IP only comes into it when you try to enter into Internet
Explorer or in my case Firefox. Who's got the knowledge about this IP thing
to help me and tell me what to do as I am scared to play around with it as if
I get it wrong then I must wait for the tech's to come and fix it which could
take a while.

Hello Cams,

tell me how are you connected to the internet?
And are you using Norton?
Some times the Norton System works has problems what give a huge
slowdown at boot, a repair can fix that!

Hi Tom, I connect to the net through a wireless Lan. I am running AVG now for anti virus not Norton, took it off just after we bought the computer last year. I am still trying to beat this thing and will eventually do it though when I don't know, it'll take someone with more brains about computers than me and my knowledge is zero.
