slow boot/logon - System.ini file probs - HELP

Just upgraded my IBM Thinkpad A22m OS to WinXP from Win2000. Bootup + logon
is now VERY slow. System seems to "hang" after initial startup screen (black
background w/logo) at the logon screen (blue background) before bringing up
the login dialog icons. Hardisk monitor shows read access stops for about 30
seconds, then continues and completes boot/logon process, allowing me to
login. Went through XP System Config. Tool, performed clean boot startup
checks. Problem causing slow/delayed boot + logon has been isolated to
System.ini file. How can I determine what is what in the System.ini file and
isolate the specific problem(s) therein to try and resolve this issue? THANK
YOU!!

Visit the IBM support web site and download and install all
the recommended Windows XP drivers, starting with the
latest BIOS update.

Followed all actions as instructed, did not resolve slow boot (logon screen
hang) problem. However, a SECOND problem has now arisen in addition: WinXP
device manager now shows a yellow exclamation (!) point symbol over the
removable CD/RW - DVD ROM drive (model Toshiba SD-R2002). Properties tab
says that driver has been disabled (error 32) and the CD drive no longer
shows up as available drive under "my computer" or WinExplorer directory
search. HELP?!? Via device mgr properties tab, I attempted to update driver
w/no success. I troubleshooted and uninstalled the drive device, but
following WinXP instructions to reinstall (add) the hardware I was unable to
do so...Drive apparently re-installed w/ next restart.

Please note that apparently my DVD decoder driver and my CD/RW software
(adaptec DirectCD) is not compatible w/ WinXP and has not yet been updated.
Can you help me further? As mentioned before, my "clean boot" tests isolated
boot delay issue to the system.ini file, because when I disabled the "process
system.ini" option via Selective Startup in the WinXP System Configuration
Utility, next boot up was perfect and fast as HECK! Please please please
help me at least resolve the CD drive issue...! THANKS A TON!!
