Slow automatic updates

I have a PC running XP Home SP2 with a broadband connection.
Automatic Updates is turned on, set to install at a set time.

On Tuesday of this week, Microsoft released several security patches.
I decided to let Automatic Updates install them, just to make sure it was
working okay and to see how quickly this would be done. Well, as of 5 pm ET
Friday, these updates still haven't been downloaded. How about the rest of
you? I'll wait until Saturday morning. If no activity, I'll visit
Microsoft Updates and install the files there.

Mine downloaded in a few minutes.

I have a computer-illiterate relative (XP user, broadband connection,
Automatic Updates turned on) whom I often help via Remote Assistance. I
just checked his PC, and AU hasn't gotten around to downloading those
critical updates either. Just for precaution, I went ahead and installed
them via Microsoft Updates. Myself, I'll wait until tomorrow morning.

Absent any errors from your Windowsupdate.log, I'll suggest that, like many
around the world, you're seeing extreme delays caused by excessive demand on
the servers. We saw similar behavior in August when six (6) patches were
released and now there are nine (9), two or 3 of them for all OSS, Win98
through Win2K03.

Be patient: If Automatic Updates doesn't bring 'em in by, say, 17 Oct-05
(Monday), post back.

Or you can try downloading/installing 'em via Windows/Microsoft Update page
(and for best results, try it during off-peak hours, e.g., 11:00 PM-7:00AM
PDT). Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates
users further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
you've not gotten them yet).

I restarted my computer a couple of hours ago, knowing that after a
reboot is when AU checks for files....at least for me. Sure enough, after
a couple of minutes I saw the yellow exclamation mark in my systray,
downloading the files.
