sloooooow opening folders

I've had a problem recently opening folders containing files (as opposed to
just other subfolders). For instance, a folder on my desktop may take 20
seconds to open if it has 4 Word documents, another folder on my desktop with
100 or so jpg's will take 4 or 5 minutes, and the worst of all is a folder on
a second hard drive that has my entire CD collection of about 6500 songs that
just took 35 minutes to open. The problem only happens when I'm using
Explorer though, programs have no problem accessing the actual files; ITunes
runs fine using those songs, and I can open the folder containing the Word
documents through the File:Open dialog box in Word. I'm using XP Home
Edition, and I assume this should be an easy fix, I just don't have any idea
what it is. Can anyone help? Thanks!

One idea:
Disable Indexing Services

Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often slow down a computer. It supposed to index when the pc is not busy or active, but unfortunately it does not pick it's times very well and the indexing can make your pc seem non responsive. This system process of indexing updates a complete list of files and folders on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completley unnecessary.

To disable it, go to the Control Panel and click Add or Remove
Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. Simply untick the
Indexing services and click Next!

also

Open up My Computer, select Tools, Folder Options from the Menu. You will see a View tab, select this. There is a check box at the very top that says to Automatically search for network folders and printers. Uncheck this and see if it speeds up opening.

I'm sure others will come along with suggestions too.

Thanks, I did try that already and no luck, I guess I had turned it off a
long time ago already...

Click start - run - type msconfig and press enter. enter startup tab and
uncheck unneeded programs. Also if you have ATI graphic card I recommend you
to disable ATI things.

Why not try to see if the same problem occurs in safemode. If there is not
problem, then you can use the process of elimination for your normal mode.
Some good suggestions were provided by others.

However, to me as a quick thought, you could cycle the indexing and wia
services in services.msc via run. Sometimes these too have an affect on the
explorer. Also, you might have somekind of antiviral, maybe several
antiviruls that is checking, double checking triple checking and or
cataloging your files.......
