Can you slip SP3 into build 5.1.2600.0 (Gold) or must you slip SP1a or SP2
first?

Thanks

Slipstream XP Gold and SP1 or SP2 first. Then slipstream SP3 with XP SP2
slipstreamed cd.

The service packs are cumulative, it has never been needed to apply (or
slipstream) a previous service pack before the latest one.

Correct!

"Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a service pack that is cumulative back to the
last currently-supported service pack. This means that Windows XP Service
Pack 3 contains all the fixes that were included with Windows XP Service
Pack 2 (SP2). If you have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3),
you do not have to install Windows XP SP2.

Note You must have either Windows XP Service Pack 1a or Windows XP Service
Pack 2 installed in order to install Windows XP Service Pack 3."

The majority of the word I've heard say that you can't do it with XP
Gold. Gold has to have at least one SP1a or better applied.

BUT if you read this 'steps to take before you install SP3' article from
MS, it says nothing about any service pack prerequisites. Ironically
we've seen reports that AV software and RDP software issues cause
problems and this article does address those two issues.

So maybe that Gold thing is just hearsay.

Someone posted this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 saying
that SP1a is required. So Gold does need something.

It generally has been correct. However it's *not* correct in this
instance. Read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389, which says

"Note You must have either Windows XP Service Pack 1a or Windows
XP Service Pack 2 installed in order to install Windows XP Service
Pack 3."

The doubt remains: how does "slipstreaming" relate to "install"?
The operation is not an actual installation of the service pack on a live
system: it's an integration of setup files into an install media, and it
most certainly doesn't *use* files on the media, it just replaces them with
newer ones. Whereas the actual installation makes use of the underlying
operating system, so it *can* have troubles if something is too old.

Makes sense? Doesn't? Who knows? Maybe Microsoft should state this a bit
more explicitly.

Slipstreaming does a little more than just copy files. It does run the
update executible.

Yes, because that's who actually replaces files in the i386 directory.
But I think this is *quite* different from installing it on a live system...
