Error message

I installed a new WD 320 Gig HD. Did a clean install using slip stream XP Pro
SP2 with SP3. When I try to install new programs, I've gotten the following
messages, but not at the same time:
1- access denied. You must have writable right on the disk
2- The InstallShield Engine (ikernal.exe) could not be installed.Ikernal
could not be copied to C:\Program Files\Installshield\Engine\6\Intel32. Make
sure that you have the appropriate privileges to copy files to this folder.
(0x5)
I do have administrator privileges as administrator. Can I correct this
problem or do I do a clean install without the slipstream?

Tried both suggestions. Still same result. Anything else to try with
reinstalling?

Those are Installshield error messages.

Installshield is the package used to install/distribute programs and
what gets run when you try to Setup or Install and is not part of
Windows. The error 5 is indeed a permissions/access denied thing

This particular error was popular in IS 6 (say... is that
\Installshield\Engine\6 I see in your path?).

What program are you trying to install that is still using an old
version of IS? Is there a new download/install for your afflicted
program(s)?

I think the problem is not with XP and you may not be able to fix it
by changing XP. It could be IS version 6 and not your problem at
all.

Here is Installshield home: http://www.acresso.com/products/is/installshield-overview.htm

They have a Support forum and many Google results for that message. I
don't know how they all turned out - maybe somebody figured it out by
now.

Thanks for the information. I checked the site and got one solution that
didn't work. Will be checking the support forum a little further. Will keep
you posted.

I hope you figure it out.

I may not have been clear that IS is not something you would typically
"install" on your system for any purpose, unless you are developing a
deployment package. It is a popular installation development tool.

IS is part of the process used to install your unspecified program.

Is it one particular program giving you difficulty, and if yes, maybe
somebody can be more help if you specify the application you are
trying to install. It could be that the people that make the package
know about this problem.

Since the format & clean install, has the computer ever been connected to
the internet or a network or have you inserted a previously-used USB key
without (a) a firewall enabled and/or without (b) a valid, fully-updated
anti-virus application installed?

You might try the following:

1. Download FixPolicies.exe by MS MVP Bill Castner, saving it to your
desktop: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCastner/FixPolicies.exe
2. Double click on FixPolicies.exe to run the utility.
3. Click on Install: a folder named FixPolicies will be created on your
desktop.
4. Open the FixPolicies folder.
5. Double click on Fix_policies.cmd to run it. A Command prompt will open
and close quickly; this is normal.
6. Reboot.

I did find more suggestions to correct the problem. Looking for "iKernal.exe"
in Task Manager,it was not present. I can't delete the InstallShield folder
or any of it's subfolders so I can't install an update. How could I delete
that particular folder? There was also a suggestion to uninstall the Software
Manager and reinstall using FLEXnet Connect. Would that uninstall
InstallShield?

I finally gave up. It got to the point where I could not install anything. I
reformatted the hard drive and re-installed XP Pro with all the downloaded
updates and all the rest of my software. Everything is working, but now I
have another problem which I'll do in another posted question. Thanks again
for your help.
