Slide timings I set do not play consistently

This particular slide show I have is in PPT2003 and is approx. 25 slides and
2.5 mins. I have a mp3 file playing continuously throughout the show. I
have set very, very specific slide timings to correspond to certain beats
throughout the song. I have to play the slide show at least 4 times before
the slide timings occur exactly how I originally set them. The slides aren't
changing as quickly as they should because the song ends, and there are 2-3
slides remaining (when the song should end with the last slide). The show
MUST play correctly the first time without me having to "warm it up!!"
What's going on here?

As you have discovered, exact timing is not going to happen with PowerPoint.
If exact timing is critical you'll need to use another software pacackage.
