Slide image in notes not matching to notes master

In the notes master I define the slide image placeholder to be a
certain size and positioned in a certain location.

However, when I view a notes page, the slide image placeholder is
slightly out of place and slighlty smaller compared to how it is set in
the master. It difference seems to be relevant to the placeholder size,
i.e. the bigger I make the placeholder in the more noticeable the
discrepancy, plus the difference seems more notable on the horizonal
compared to the vertical - but this could simply be a factor of having
a landscaped page layout.

Where is this discrepancy coming from?

I could write a bit of VBA code to fix the note's placeholder back to
the size I want to be but I'd prefer to stop the problem happening at
all if possible.

Have you tried reapplying the Notes Master Layout to the slides?

Shyam Pillai offered this advice:

Goto http://www.mvps.org/skp/toolbox install the add-in. It's fully
functional and free for 15 days. It has a routine which can be accessed by
selecting Toolbox | Slides | Reapply master on notes layout which works on
the entire presentation.

Are you using an inkjet printer? On them, the margins are often not even,
and PowerPoint adds them to your side.

I changed by default Printer to Adobe PDF and that didn't change
anything

Yes, I've been re-applying the master a lot, even deleting the
placeholder and re-adding it.
