Sleepy NIC to DSL?
Hi, J
I have a problem with the ISP network connection disconnecting while the
machines are inactive. Whenever the screen saver or monitor turns off (50
min / 2 hours respectively) and I wake it up the balloon popup says the
local area 2 is now connected.
The problem doesn't affect the operations in any way except that the IP from
the ISP is DHCP'ed with only a 4 hour lease. So when the lease has expired
the DHCP client starts complaining for six to eight times for 6 to 10 hours
and then it says "I quit!", and the the browser complains and demands a new
election to take over his job from on of the other computers (this browser
complaint would indicate that it can't talk to the clients, not the ISP?)
What in Windows XP SP2 (like the firewall or the exception listed 3rd party
firewall) would cause the DSL connection to disconnect just because of
inactivity?
P.S. This was not happening right after I installed SP2, but has started
happening in the last 2 weeks. The only thing I did was narrow down the open
ports on my 3rd party firewall but all the standard programs work fine with
the exception of windows time on the clients.
Is there some simple thing I am over looking (like a port or a WFW setting?
Thank you,
SJ
