sleep problems

I have an HP s7700n PC with vista home premium out of the box and when i hit
sleep it acts like it is going to sleep and then starts to reboot right after
going off but gets stuck with just the fan on and the screen black with
pointer. If I hold the power button it turns totally off and then when i
power up it comes back on but sometimes is very sluggish to get going and
show desk top. The start menu across bottom starts black and slowly turns
normal. The comp did this a few times and then was working fine and now it is
doing it again.

Dear Mario

I was annoyed by similar problems with my laptop.
Good news, I solved the problem Bad news I don't remember the specifics.

What I do remember was 'fiddling' with
Control Panel
Hardware and Sound
Power Options
Choose what the power button does
Choose what happens with the lid (Mine's a laptop)

I also experimented with my screen saver settings.

I have been fiddling too as i am not a knowledgeable computer person. it
seems to not be consistent. sometimes things work fine and then all of a
sudden it tries to go to sleep and almost does and then locks up with a black
screen and i can only shut off with power button on tower and restart and
sometimes i have to do this twice in a row to get pc on windows. i hope i am
not damageing my pc by doing this but don't know what to do

This suggests that you have one or more drivers installed for devices that
aren't properly going to sleep. Unfortunately this sort of thing is
extremely difficult to troubleshoot. About the only thing I can suggest is
disabling the services for any add-on devices (like the wireless network
card) and seeing if you can't figure out which service or driver is causing
the issue.

Or, wait until Microsoft releases a shutdown/standby troubleshooter for
Vista.

if i set all settings to just a few minutes like screen saver in 1-2 mins and
turn off display in 4 mins and sleep in 5 - 10 mins it seems to work but in
a more normal set up like 6 for screen saver and 15 for display and 20 for
sleep it wont work. seems like screen saver comes on and then in the 15
minutes to turn off display the screensaver stops and desktop shows and then
screensaver cycles on and off like that but never sleeps. what the?? with
vista sleep why havent they sent out a fix yet with all these issues
