my computer has just gone into sleep mode and now I cannot get it to
restart - how do I fix this problem.

Cheryl, it depends on whether you have a 'reset' button on your computer.
Usually, they are very small, (often unlabelled) little buttons near your
Start button and the Hard drive light and power light. I don't know if they
are ever in the back. If no button, Press the Power button for as long as it
takes to make it boot back up. I am assuming that you've tried the violent
mouse moves and keyboard banging to try and wake it up! Also, some keyboards
have a sleep button that might also wake it up.

GKI, thanks, but it appears IBM have been extremely helpful in either
not providing a reset button or there just is not one.
Also, it goes into sleep mode before XP even gets a chance to boot up
- so could be bigger problem.

Oh, oh. How much screen activity do you see before it quits? If
nothing-(Screen 'Power up' [green]lite), screen backlamp (if LCD), any light
on the tower or laptop comes on, it's not seeing the hard drive. That may
mean failure of the HD. Do you have an emergency boot disc? If a tower, you
might even look for a light on the ethernet card (green).
If there's no activity, unplug for a minute, and plug in again. If you get
any reaction, watch the screen closely for dying messages, like "Boot error -
Can't read disk or drive": HD is gunnysack; or "Boot error - Please remove
disk [and insert correct........] may mean HD is failing during the boot up
POST (test) or there is corruption in the BIOS or Startup procedures. Good
luck. If you have another internet connection ('puter') available, go to IBM
or call them w/model of your machine & ask them if there is a reset, or to
help you. Of course, if it's out of warranty..............
