SK8N : one long and two short beeps during POST

Diane

I am about to return the SK8N ASUS mother board I just purchased and
thought I would post my problem here first and see if anyone has any
suggestions.

I am building a new system and decided to go with a Athlon 64 bit FX
processor. The motherboard that was recommeded by mail order company I
ordered from was the ASUS SK8N.

I put the system together, installed the processor and memory and now
when I power it on I do not get past a beep sequence that indicates a
serious problem with memory. I recieve one long and 2 short beeps.
Originally I ordered
2 Corsair's Valueselect 2700 type 512 MB chips, I then puchased 2 x
512 DDR Kingston Samsung 3200 type memory. I recieve the same beep
sequence for both.

My thoughts are that I really need a BIOS upgrade to support the FX
processor but have no way of completing the bios upgrade since the
system will not boot up to an OS.

This in mind I am thinking of sending the board back and going with a
different board. All the memory and components work in my other
systems (I have not tested the processor anywhere else).

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I think you are using the wrong kind of memory. If you go to
www.crucial.com, they will list the right kind of memory for any
Asus motherboard. Here is the entry for the SK8N:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...rboards&mfr=ASUS&cat=RAM&model=SK8N&submit=Go

Notice all the entries are "Registered" and "ECC". I think the memory
you have purchased is "unbuffered" and "non-ECC", which is the exact
opposite of what is required.

Check the user manual that came with your motherboard, to verify the
correct kind of memory to use.

There aren't too many vendors of high performance registered memory.
You might also want to read reviews of the SK8N on Tomshardware.com
and other sites, to see what brands they have been using. The
register chips necessary to make registered PC3200 DIMMs haven't
been available for too long, so it will be a while before more vendors
make that kind of memory. There will be plenty of registered memory at
PC2100, but not a lot at PC3200.

Kingston also has a search engine that lists memory by motherboard model.
The SK8N is here:
