Site Page Loading on Reports

I was examining my reports on Frontpage and it said my index or homepage was
very very very slowwwwww at 28.8 bps. This is based on what is over 10
seconds downloading time. The index page is a whopping 1421 seconds, all
other pages are at 40-65 seconds, still too slow.

Are these reports accurate? I am running XP on Broadband at 3.0 GHz Ram so
when I test it's fast. Friends have told me it was ok even on dial up
connections.

How do we really know if there is a problem?

They're often accurate, but sometimes they do get thrown out of whack.
Basically you can figure out the time by adding up the file size of all
objects and dividing them by 2.8, not 28.8 (or 5.6 not 56) due to the fact
that baud rate is in thousands of bytes per second and we need to switch to
KiloBytes instead. This provides a rough estimate. Most developers target
around 80 KB of data in a page (including the page itself) to offer a
reasonable download experience for those still on dial-up. Look in your
front page for a graphic that could be in a bitmap (bmp) or png file format
instead of gif or jpg as part of the bloat.

Hope this helps,

The reports are only estimates. They assume that the browser wil need to
download every picture ofr component (nothing from cache) and that the
connection speed will be as you specify.

It's your decision what connection speed to assume, and how long you thing
the visitors are willing to wait.

That said, a nice snappy download time is a wonderful thing for any page,
especially the home page, to have. If you have any video or music files in
your home page, I'd recommend removing them. Most visitors want quick access
to information, not a multimedia production.
