SIS 661FX resolution issues on ASUS P5S800-VM

Hi,

So I've got an ASUS P5S800-VM board with the integrated 661FX graphics, connected to a
Samtron 72V TFT monitor, capable of 1280x1024@75Hz. However, I don't seem to be able to
set a graphics rate higher than 1024x768 even though they are listed as available. If I
do, it sets it as a virtual screen at 1024x768 native screen resolution. The SIS video
utlitiy only shows a CRT connected. I'm running W98SE btw.

I've seen this problem posed a couple of times before on newsgroups, but never seen an
answer.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

Regards

Perhaps this is applicable. It involves changing out the "setup.ini"
file in the installer directory, before installing the video driver.
I think this makes some registry changes:

The FAQ has the suggestion here:

This is a new setup.ini file:
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/vga/sis760/Setup.zip

This is another recipe, mentioned by the OP in that thread.

http://www.windowsforumz.com/Hardwa...-Desktop-1024x768-restrict-ftopict238985.html

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{6609DF5E-7F17-45DC-8EDA-35248A664945}\0000"

--> "SiS.2D.NonDDCResolutionBound"="1280.1024.100"

Maybe your chipset has the same issues and the same installer.

Who knows, maybe SIS will even fix this some day :)

So I got hold of the new setup.ini file from the above archive, copied the display drivers
from the ASUS CD (which appeared to be straight SIS stuff, without ASUS changes) onto the
hard drive, and dropped the setup.ini file in there. This didn't work, as I think there
were some version issues. The altered setup.ini file seems to be for version 3.65 and the
included drivers were 3.61. I had a look on sis.com and could only find 3.68, so I tried
the new file with that and, hahey, it worked. (I'd tried the 3.68 drivers alone before,
and they didn't fix the problem.)

I now have a functioning 1280x1024x75 screen :)

Many thanks for helping on that one, if only this "fix" could go into the released
drivers!
