SIS 740 reduced resolution after driver upgrade

steve

Windows Update decided that I should upgrade my SIS740 (to
be more precise: SIS 650_651_M650_M652_740) driver to
version 6.14.10.3540.

At about the same time I exchanged my CD-ROM drive by a
BenQ 4x4DVD-R/RW+ writer and change the respective IDE
channel to be using DMA if available.

Since then, my system supports only resolutions up to
1024x768, but before I had support for 1280x1024 and
1600x1200 as well.

To add insult to injury, I just bought myself a 1280x1024
TFT flat screen before this happened. BTW, on my laptop
the 1280x1024 work fine.

Anybody know how to fix this? Or at least somebody might
explain the relationship between having a DVD-R/RW+ writer
and reduced resolutions on an on-board graphics card.

Thanks in advance
Steve

I wouldnt reccomend using winupdate to update any drivers, they are often
generic drivers and can give problems. Use the hardware manu.site
Since probs started with updated drivers uninstall/go back to origonal sis
driver

Sorry, I forgot to mention that returning to the previous
driver doesn't resolve the problem. I tried that several
times.

I have downloaded a whole history of drivers from SIS,
in particular 650 2.21, 650 2.19, 650 2.18, 650 2.15,
650 2.09. None of them works. By tinkering around I once
found 1280x768 to be supported, but by now it reverted
back to 1024x768 max. resolution.

I wonder if this may be caused by some hardware
incompatibility:

I have 2 hard disks attached to IDE0, and DVD/CD-Writer +
DVD-R/RW+ attached to IDE1. I also have an additional
ATI133/Raid controller with 2 more harddisks.

I had bought the TFT flat panel together with the DVD-
R/RW+ (BenQ 400), and as I installed the DVD-R/RW+ my RAID
array started to misbehave. At that time I had 1280x1024
resolution running. In order to resolve the RAID array
problem, I updated the respective driver (SIL 0680). That
got the RAID working again, but in the same process I also
updated the Display driver to version 6.14.10.3540. Also
at the same time, I changed my CPU/FSB clock from 100 MHz
to 133 MHz.

I tried to roll back all of the changes, but at the moment
have not:

Deinstalled the DVD-R/RW+
Rolled back the RAID controller driver (for obvious
reasons)

I have also tried setting the CPU/FSB clock back to 100
MHz, and tinkered around with the VGA related BIOS
settings (Graphic Win Size and Shared Memory Size).

All to no avail!

If somebody got some technical explanations on possible
causes, that would really be helpful.

Thanks in advance
Steve
