Single Outlook 2003 profile with Exchange for multiple users

We use Outlook 2003 with Exchange server for email in our computer science
courses. We have been creating roaming user profiles. We want these profiles
to be read only to our students. In Outlook 2000, we were able to do this by
configuring Outlook with a template profile, and then removing the username
and saving the profile. The profile is read only to its other users, the
students. So far, we have configured Outlook, and when the student launches
it, the set process starts all over, but at least the Exchange server name is
there, but the student will have to provide there username. We would like
Outlook to start as though it were already setup for a particular student.
Note, we do not want to manage 300 separate profiles for Outlook.

Microsoft uses text files with a .prf extension and a highly structured format to provide information to OUtlook that enables Outlook to create or modify a mail profile. You can create such .prf files with the Custom Installation Wizard or Custom Maintenance Wizard tools in the Office Resource Kit. For more details, including a variety of .prf deployment methods, read the excellent white paper "Configuring Outlook Profiles by Using a PRF File" at http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?assetid=HA011403051033&QueryID=pHm7c_60I&respos=3

The page at http://www.slipstick.com/exs/olroam.htm includes information on other profile tools and resources.

Thanks Sue. I actually saw some of your responses to others before I got this
one. I found ork.exe and the whitepaper to create a prf file for Outlook. It
seems to be working by using the /importprf switch launching Outlook. Since
our workstations already had Office installed, this was a quicker solution.
Perhaps we should have devised a custom installation first.
Thanks again, JJ
