Single byte errors copying large files over network

Hi Group,

I'm trying to copy 500-700 meg disk images over my network from a WinXP Pro
machine to a Win2k Server.

Every time I copy a file I seem to get 1 or 2 bytes messed up.
If I copy a file from one folder to another on the same machine, I get no
errors, it's just when I drag n' drop into the folder of another machine
that causes problems.

The errors are not reported, I only see them when I use a file compare
program like Araxis Merge, or somesuch (and they are serious errors, not
just whitespace issues).

I've been able to get files across via FTP, but I'd be interested in
knowing what the deal with drag n' drop copying is?

Help?

Thanks for looking for me Marina, but I'm not having slow copy or error
messages during copy. Everything appears to complete normally, but when I
do a comparison between the two files afterwards, there's always one or two
bytes that are altered.

I've found that even FTP doesn't seem to reliably transfer the files. :(

Hi Kaila,
What does the DOS prompt display as the file size from one system
to the other? Is there an actual problem with the file once it is
transferred. The different file systems on the different OS's could be
just showing it a different size based on the size of the on disk for that
file system. If there is no problem with the file itself. I would not worry
about it.

Thank you,

I was doing a byte compare with Araxis Merge and a few freeware diffing
programs.

After a bunch of testing it turns out that on one of my machines, the RAM
appeared to be bad, since removing one of the simm's fixed the problem.

On my server, I still get errors (actual bytes have changed) when I copy
files across to the server.

Robocopy reports everything is fine, even when the verification switch is
on, but a followup test with Araxis, windiff, or other diff program shows
the files to be different in a few random places.
Drag n' Drop copying as well as FTP also fail to prevent transfer errors,
and no error messages are ever reported by the copying applications (OS,
ftp client/server, etc...).

I'm going to try swapping the ram on the server too, I suppose I could be
really unluck and have multiple simm's going bad.

After trying everything I could software-wise, I pulled and rearranged
hardware.

Results are that I had a bad ram module in one computer _and_ some sort
of compatibility problem with my motherboard and hardware raid card in my
other box (server).

Now that it's settled, I'm still disturbed that RoboCopy and other copy
utilities that I tried said everything was OK, even when they were told
to verify their work.

The only way to see that the files were different was to intraspect them
with a diff tool and see that one or two bytes out of the 700 meg file
had been changed. :(

Thanks for the replies, I suppose I'll have to right my own copy program.
Anyone know if there's a way to replace the windows copy (drag n' drop /
cut n' paste) with your own?
